The question is pretty straight forward. I say that we are living in a Moral Stone Age. Why? Who could say? Maybe it's the fact that people think that they're just really advanced pond scum. Perhaps it's because nobody cares about the worth of anyone else. Women are treated like sexual possesions. Children are treated like trophies. Money drives us in this age. Greed, lust, the desire for more, more, more is pushing us to the outer boundaries of human goodness. Morals have become optional. Nobody can tell you what's right and what's wrong, because that's up to each individual. Or maybe it's because we as humans are drawn to what we want, rather than what others want. If humans would just try living for the improvement of soceity for only one day, what a difference that would make! Instead of doing things for yourself, try to do things for others, without any extra motives like greed, lust, or spite. I'm sure that if we did, the world would be a different place. The Decline of Morals in Soceity. True or false?
The ';decline'; of morality obviously suggests that there was a higher standard of morality.
When? Many people say, ';Well naturally when Leave it to Beaver was on television. Look how moral they were!'; Yeah buddy, they were racists, sexists, and bigots. They simply hid it better.
Aristotle was noted as complaining about the decline of morality.
Since the dawn of history, grandparents complained that their grandchildren's entertainment would rot their brains. There has ALWAYS been genocide, corruption, and other signs of immorality.
I think we've always been this morally bankrupt. The Decline of Morals in Soceity. True or false?
YES!
Well said! I completely agree!
I agree, If people treated others the way they themselves want to be treated then we would not have a lot of the BS we have in the world now. I think people have simply lost fear of God's wrath. We were given free will and people have chosen not to believe they will speak for their actions on judgment day. People feel that God has dealt them a bad hand in reality their choices have led them to where they are. God only provides tools to live a good life he is not going to do the work for you. People need to make more informed choices and think of the big picture. Not just the here and now. I think people like you and I can make a difference by instilling these values in our children and our children's' children. And by spreading the word. Don't be so angry. Think smarter not harder!
Right On Man. Preach and be heard.
Unless you are already involved with some Christian charity, some non-secretarial charity, or something that can use your obvious intellectual intelligence toward helping humanity in whatever way you would want to, then you need to get with it!. Certainly you could connect up with even a soup kitchen, like my son does regularly, the Salvation Army, or get really optimistic, go national, with the Red Cross (where you can opt to leave home to visit new rescue sites as they become disaster areas), whatever. Go for it. Maybe I'm missing your point, but you certainly need to branch out in some way rather than just keep sitting there and procrastinating in a stalemate with yourself. Maybe you should look into the ';Peace Corps.'; Whatever. Here's another idea, you can connect with Maryknoll Fathers %26amp; Brothers, P.O. Box 301, Maryknoll, NY 10545-0301 and ask them about their various programs that involve lay people throughout the world. I would certainly hope, if any of these suggestions have been helpful to you, that you would eventually let me know easily by keeping this email site in your files and letting me know. Great luck in the meantime! Joe Corcoran at jorcor1999@yahoo.com
People have always been this ';morally bankrupt'; - to quote someone above me, what has changed is society's tolerance. Back in the 50's Elvis was given crap because he shook his hips. Now you see some of the stuff on tv - it doesn't even have to be cable - and you can tell. Media (plural of medium) like the internet haven't helped much either.
Easiest thing in one's life is to criticize.I've seen thousands of criticizers, but very few of revolutionars. Let's put it this way - what do You have of this discussion?
First of all, moral is an artificial creation. It's based on fear from sanction that you could be exposed to, rejection and judgement of society. Fear is also artificial feeling- you worry of something that never happened, waist Your time and run from certain activity, just because in Your head stands prejudice that something bad can happen. Just be sure to make distinction fear / being cautious.
Now, moral... Someone said: ';True moral isn't about: I SHOULDN'T, I COULDN'T, THAT'S NOT GOOD... It's I WON'T!';
We forgot to accept other people. We forgot to LOVE. True good, that's not selfish, that doesn't count on interest, that's not pushed by expectations of others, of society, of world, but helped with desire to make a substantial, deep change of this world COMES FROM THE HEART! AND KEY TO THE HEART IS UNDERSTANDING!
It's true, morals have declined in our society as well as other parts of the world. Take a look at our educational system in this country, they [politicians] say anyone can go to college and achieve anything, and it's total garbage because if you don't have the money to go then you're screwed and they could care less if you get an education or not.
Money, sex, greed, and drugs are what some have called a ';moral dilemma';.
Women treated like sexual possessions? You'd be hard pressed to find an age when women WEREN'T treated like sexual possessions.
Children are trophies? Gasp! God forbid they be treated like trophies. Not like the good old days when they were treated to long days working in factories, or unable to go to school because they had to work on the farm, or when 12 year old girls were allowed/made/forced to marry old guys.
The problem with your assessment is that you're cherry-picking your data. That is, you're picking an ideal from the past with which to compare the present, but in reality, the past wasn't any better at all, and most likely was much, much worse.
You're also not considering the effect of technology. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that more information is available now than ever before. It wasn't long ago that there was no internet, no sattelite communications, and you'd be lucky to get more than 5 stations on your TV (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, and maybe an independent).
What does this have to do with declining morals? Before advances in technology a lot of the nasty horrible kinds of things that would have you in such outrage, never made it to your TV station, or your radio, or your newspaper. Therefore, it only SEEMS to be worse.
Also because of the VIRTUE of tolerance, people whose lifestyles you might find disgusting are less fearful of coming out into the open. This is often hard for people to swallow. I personally cringe inside when I see men kiss. I find the very idea to be repulsive. But I'd rather live in a society that was tolerant of two guys making out on a park bench, than one that didn't.
After all, where do you draw the line? First you supress gays. Then what, Goths? Muslims? Atheists? Punk Rockers?
“In Germany they first came for the communists; and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a communist. Then they came for the Jews; and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists; and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics; and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Catholic. Then they came for me – and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.”
– Martin Niemoller
The world would be a different place! oh yes! what a noble thought!
Absolutism is not the answer.
Nor is repression.
You think your DESIRE to make the world better
isn't something Animal?!
Everyone is moral.
Just not how you have quantified it with your ethical yardstick.
Well that is a long speech. Your answer is true morals are in decline. Your secondary and true reason for the question I am afraid will not happen ...at least any time soon
